Escape Slash

Think of an escape character as the "magic signal" of a computer. It is a method of telling the computer, "Hey, don't do your normal thing with the next character; treat the next character in a special way according to my instructions." For example, an escape slash can be used to display a quotation mark (") as a regular character rather than as a sentence terminator. The first example is using the escape slash, while the second example is not.
